This month has been a busy one despite the heat!

At the beginning of the month we did the usual mowing and strimming. Since then, the grass hasn’t grown much but we have kept on top of any patches that needed attention.

We strimmed and hedge trimmed the visibility splays around the play area and did some more weed killing in the village centre.

We also cut the verge along Union Drove.

Ragwort has appeared in a few areas around the village so we have pulled and east with that. We will continue to do so as it appears.

The tree survey in the cemetery has also been completed and the report will be written shortly.

We have also cut back the hedges along the inside paths in the cemetery.

Main task this month has been grass cutting: cemetery, Millennium Wood and before recent verge cutting, junction splays.

We have also done some hedge trimming and hogweed bashing in MW and some weed spraying in the centre of the village. We have also removed some trees alongside rides  in MW that were showing signs of decline.
Millennium Wood

Further winter maintenance  work continued – bramble clearing, diseased/squirrel-damaged trees felled, thinning to growing create space for healthy trees.

All the new  Lost Words plaques have been placed in the wood and their location has been mapped. There has been increased Geocache activity with the Geocache in MW.

Vegetation

The vegetation around the Parish Grit Bins has been cleared, and the salt levels have been checked. Ok

Drainage: We are planning to clear the vegetation around the grit bins, hopefully this week,  and no doubt we’ll be doing more drainage – clearing grips, grids etc.

Millennium Wood

We have  been dealing with storm damaged trees in Millennium Wood, including those that have fallen over, or with compromised structure.

We have made progress on the new signs for the Lost Words  in MW. The signs have been cut and painted and I’m now working my way through getting the lettering on. They will then need to be varnished –  but we need some dry days!

October ’24 Actions following MW site meeting

May ’24 Our Parish Lengthsman Team, Craig and Rachael Howe, have been clearing vegetation from some junction splays in the parish where visibility is obscured. They have also been working in the cemetery and Millennium Wood. Craig has now removed the support for the Wild Service tree planted on Little Green in  ’19.

March ’24 The last 3 trees adjacent to power lines have been pollarded by HiLine. Since the end of February Craig and Rachael have started vegetation management: cutting the grass in the cemetery and millennium wood. Millennium wood is still quite wet in places so there are some areas they will leave until it’s dry enough to get on them to cut. They have also been tidying the cemetery including the Garden of Rest, trimming back the hedges and trees overhanging the paths and removing plastics. They have been carrying out thinning in Millennium Wood, removing some of the worst affected ash trees focusing mainly on those that are close to the rides and areas of higher footfall.

February ’24 Pollarding the trees on The Green. Lengthsman Craig Howe assisted by Reuben pollarded till all the trees clear of power lines. The trees have been regularly pollarded since their planting over a century ago. The work is funded by HH Parish Council as is the rôle of Parish Lengthsman.

January ’24 Tuesday 2nd our Parish Lengthsman Team Craig and Rachael were continuing their work on clearing drain grids in the parish, this time between Low Ham and Henley (near Wishal). To quote Rachael, ‘Very satisfying work and many ‘puddles’ were banished!’  As we are all aware, grids and grips across the parish and beyond, are getting blocked quicker than they can be cleared  – it’s a never-ending task! They plan to continue this work over the Winter season.
